Frank facts about... FRANKS!

Americans will eat more than an estimated 7 billion hot dogs between Memorial Day and Labor Day, with more than 150 million consumed on July 4th alone, according to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council. But what will top all those dogs? Oscar Mayer conducted a survey to find out how Americans like to dress their dogs.

· Among the 10 markets surveyed, mustard (77%) was the No. 1 one hot dog topping, followed by ketchup (58%), onions (50%), relish (47%) and cheese (41%).
· Nearly 40% of men and 45% of women said that backyard cookouts are their favorite summer hot dog eating occasion, while 34% of men and 44% of women said they don’t need a special occasion; they eat hot dogs all summer long.
· More than half of Americans plan to have more hot dogs at cookouts or family gatherings due to the economy.
You can enter the Oscar Mayer “Top Our Best Dog Contest” for a chance to win a Labor Day grill-out. Submit a photo showing how you top an Oscar Mayer Jumbo Beef Frank along with your favorite hot dog memory to www.hotdoggerblog.com. Oscar Mayer will choose one “lucky dog” to receive a Labor Day cookout complete with a visit from the Wienermobile, a top-of-the-line grill, and a year’s supply of hot dogs!

Underpants survey...

Now here's something you don't read about every day.

To celebrate the 75th Anniversary of their invention of the Brief, Jockey International conducted a national Father’s Day survey revealing which celebrity dads Americans would most like to see in their skivvies. Heartthrob father-of-six Brad Pitt rocked the vote with 29%, followed by Matthew McConaughey (24%), Hugh Jackman (19%), Will Smith (16%) and President Obama (13%). While our country’s new president has been hush-hush as to the type of underwear he wears, 42% of Americans think Obama would prefer to receive new boxer shorts from the First Family this Father’s Day; 39% think he would like boxer briefs; 16% voted for briefs. Another survey conducted by Jockey revealed that 26% of men in America own underwear that are five or more years old; a shocking 11% own underwear that are more than a decade old! In case anyone cares. Briefs.

What? Wet BOWLING shoes law...

Lawmakers in Illinois passed a bill 51-4 last Friday that aims to shield bowling alley owners from lawsuits by people who slip and fall after getting their bowling shoes wet outside. The bill, which passed the House and is now waiting for the governor’s signature, would allow owners to warn people through posted signs that bowling shoes should be worn only inside the alley. That way, if bowlers venture outside and get their shoes wet and then slip while bowling, alley owners wouldn’t be held responsible. Now THAT is making the best of hard-earned tax dollars! Right up Illinois' alley!

Shoe Toss

Father, Daughter Arrested After Shoe Fight
An argument over a pair of shoes led to criminal charges against a Granite City, Illinois, woman and her dad. The 24-year-old woman was charged with criminal property damage, while her 47-year-old father was accused of aggravated battery. Police said the daughter invited three people to her home early Monday and an argument erupted over a pair of shoes. The father intervened, clubbing one of the guests over the head with a flashlight. The daughter allegedly broke a window on one guest’s vehicle. The father claimed that the guests refused his request to leave and that he hit one visitor only after he was punched. Come to find out, the 3 "guests" were invited while the daughter was at the "bar" down the street from her home. Imagine. Alcohol was involved. OF COURSE IT WAS :-)

http://rulesofthumb.org

Every rule of thumb you’ve ever wondered about is right here at this site. Rules of thumb are like life mottos, something to live by. And finally a Web site has brought them all together so we can study and memorize them to lead fuller, happier lives. From driving to relationships, RulesOfThumb.org has them all. Some are useful: “Don’t pull the choke in a motor boat if the motor was running within the past 20 minutes,” while others are humorous: “It is said that 1 out of 3 men are ugly. If you look at 2 friends and they are good looking, you’re the ugly one.” Enjoy!

Tall people actually make more $$

No way. Tall people actually earn higher wages than their vertically-challenged counterparts, while being obese does not mean a slimmed-down pay package, according to a new study. Researchers found a strong link between wages and height, particularly for men, with each additional four inches of height adding 3% to hourly wages. The “height premium” was 2% for women, according to researchers from the University of Sydney and Canberra’s Australian National University. They calculated that every two inches above the average height of 5-feet-10-inches boosted a male’s wages by the equivalent of an extra year’s experience in the labor force. The researchers, who examined health and income data from almost 20,000 Australians, also found that being overweight didn’t mean a light paycheck, going against previous studies.

Anybody got some stilts?

Whatever you're doing. Stop.

Nation To Remember Fallen Heroes On Memorial Day

The White House Commission on Remembrance has announced highlights of activities that will unfold across the country at 3:00 p.m. local time on May 25th as Americans pause to remember the nation’s fallen heroes. The President, in his Memorial Day Proclamation, will call on Americans to observe the National Moment of Remembrance. Major League Baseball games will stop, the National Memorial Day Parade in Washington, D.C. will halt, Amtrak trains will blow their whistles, Buglers Across America will play “Taps,” and the National Grocers Association and Food Marketing Institute will ask shoppers to pause in stores nationwide to remember the fallen. Citizens are asked to pause, wherever they may be, and reflect on the sacrifices made for our freedoms. The Moment was created by the Commission after its Director asked a group of children visiting the Nation’s Capitol, “What is the meaning of Memorial Day?” Their reply was, “It’s the day the pools open.” Their innocent response, combined with a Gallup Poll that revealed only 28% of Americans know the true meaning of this holiday, resulted in the launch of the National Moment of Remembrance. Pretty cool. And about time!

Today is an ODD day...

For the mathematically challenged, today’s date 5/7/09 is one of only six this century that will feature three consecutive odd numbers. Numbers lovers say the rare occurrence is an excuse to celebrate. The previous stretch of six dates like this started with 1/3/1905, according to Ron Gordon, a teacher in California who enthusiastically promotes numerical holidays, like Square Root Day on 3/3/09. Gordon is offering a prize of $579 to someone who celebrates the date with the most zeal or gets the most people involved in an Odd Celebration. Be creative. Be Odd!

Funny or Sad?

An 82-year-old man from Goslar in central Germany became so annoyed at hearing the same serenade over and over and over that he called police to report his noisy neighbors. When police arrived, they discovered all of the noise was coming from a musical greeting card sitting on his windowsill. An occasional breeze opened the card just enough to play a tune that soon became very irritating.

What's in a name...

Be Careful What You Name Your Baby!

It’s always a good idea to stick with the tried-and-true, especially when it comes to naming your baby. After all, what parent would ever want their child growing up with a horrendous name because they thought it was cool or different? A new study from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania has found that faddish baby names tend to fizzle. The study examined 2,570 names given children in France between 1900 and 2004. It also looked at names that were given to at least 1,850 babies in the U.S. that were common for at least six years. Researchers found that many names grew in popularity over decades and then dumped. The name “Charlene,” for example, was most popular from about 1930 to 1970, before becoming almost unheard of by 2000. The names “Kristi” and “Tricia,” by contrast, shot up in popularity in the early 1970s but lost much of their appeal by 1985. The name “Shaniqua” also demonstrates the fad phenomenon. According to BabyNameWizard.com, a Web site that tracks baby names, the name shot up in popularity in the 1980s and 1990s, but vanished by 2000.

Is your Boss a Co-worker, Butthead or Bully?

Is your boss a bully who needs to feel important and boosts his ego by micromanaging?

Maybe you work with someone who is so afraid of facing criticism that problems go unsolved because they don’t speak up. Then there’s the genius down the hall who has the answer to everything, but doesn’t do anything. If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. According to professor Sylvia Lafair, whose book “Don’t Bring It To Work: Breaking The Family Patterns That Limit Success,” as much as we would like to believe that our behavior is entirely rational, our thoughts and actions may drive us to act as we did when we were a child. Lafair says that “under pressure we tend to revert to old patterns,” and who of us isn’t under pressure these days? Does that mean the country is full of a bunch of babies? Not necessarily. According to Lafair, employees fit into 13 personality types – including the persecutor, the avoider, the clown, the martyr and the rebel – and how they got that way. She says the successful ones are the ones whose success is built on self-knowledge and introspection. For a lot of stressed out managers, “Don’t Bring It To Work” might be a good place to start.

ps: Boss. NONE of this is about you..

Carwash Customer Goes Wrong Way Through Tunnel

A carwash customer recently entered through the exit of a Metro Express Car Wash conveyor tunnel in Boise, Idaho. The exit door apparently opened automatically, and the driver proceeded to drive through the tunnel, exiting at the entrance. None of the carwash equipment activated, and no other vehicles were inside the tunnel. The driver reportedly paid for a carwash and went back through the tunnel in the right direction. Do NOT try this at Sparkle!

Bird Loses It's Breakfast, Causes Power Outage

Ok. If THIS doesn't make you smile, nothing will!

Utility workers in Salem, Oregon, suspect an osprey lost its breakfast, dropping a fish on a power line and knocking out power to several homeowners. Salem Electric workers called to an outage on the west side of the state capital Wednesday found a scorched 14-inch fish beneath the line. The workers believe it was a carp. Oregon Public Utility Commission spokesman Bob Valdez said an outage caused by a fish is rare; sizzled squirrel is much more common.

Wacky Warning Labels

A toilet seat has won this year’s “Wacky Warning Labels” contest. The contest, now in its 12th year, is intended to highlight claims that frivolous lawsuits have distorted the U.S. civil justice system. This year’s winner is a submission from Steve Shiflett of Hampton, Georgia, who won $500. The label is attached to a portable toilet seat for outdoorsmen called “The Off-Road Commode.” The warning label reads “Not for use on moving vehicles.” Company officials added the warning about two years ago after learning that at least one consumer had modified their product and was driving around with it on the back of his vehicle. Finalists included:

· A wart removal product instruction guide that warns, “Do not use if you cannot see clearly to read the information in the information booklet.”
· A label on the underside of a cereal bowl warns, “Always use this product with adult supervision.”
· A small, 1” x 4” LCD panel warns, “Do not eat the LCD panel.”
· A bag of livestock castration rings warns, “For animal use only.”

What you need to know about swine flu...

So many misconceptions and fears out there re: swine flu. For the safety of you and your family, here is a reprint of the information the Center for Disease Control released Monday. Most important, be smart and don't panic.

Q. How do I protect myself and my family?

A. Scientists can’t say for sure, but in general, flu viruses spread through uncovered coughs and sneezes – or by touching your mouth or nose with unwashed hands. Flu viruses can live on surfaces for several hours – like a doorknob or desk.

Q. I’ve seen people on TV wearing face masks. Do I need one?

A. The CDC says there’s not good evidence that masks really help. It’s safer just to avoid close contact with someone who’s sick and avoid crowded gatherings in places where swine flu is known to be spreading. The CDC does say there is no harm in wearing a mask.

Q. Is swine flu treatable?

A. Yes, with Tamiflu or Relenza, but not with older flu medications.

Q. Should I start taking Tamiflu as a precaution?

A. No. Overusing antiviral drugs can help germs become resistant to them.

Q. How big is my risk?

A. For most of us, very low. Outside of Mexico, clusters of illnesses seem related to Mexican travel.

Q. Should I cancel my trip to Mexico?

A. The U.S. issued a travel advisory yesterday discouraging nonessential travel to Mexico.

Q. What are the symptoms?

A. Fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Vomiting and the runs are also a possibility.

Q. How do I know if I should see my doctor? Maybe my symptoms are from pollen.

A. Health authorities say if you live in an area where swine flu cases have been confirmed, or you have recently traveled to Mexico, and you have flu-like symptoms. Go to the doctor, just to be safe.

Q. Is there a vaccine to prevent this new infection?

A. No. If you got a flu shot last winter, it’s not likely it will prevent swine flu.

Q. How long would it take to produce a vaccine?

A. The CDC says a few months, but the government has decided yet if it’s widespread enough to start making it.

Q. Is it safe to eat pork?

A. Yes. Swine influenza doesn’t spread through food.

Be Healthy!

DIE HARD Cubs fans GOTTA read this...

Cubs Burial Ground

It’s the spot for Cubs fans after the final out. A Chicago cemetery is offering so-called “skyboxes” for the big game in the next life. The Bohemian National Cemetery on the city’s North Side has created a brick interment wall designed to look like a wall in dead center at Wrigley Field. The wall has 288 spaces for urns. Loved ones of departed fans can sit facing the wall in four seats from Wrigley Field, or play catch on a small lawn grown from Wrigley sod.

You might say, this is the spot for Cubs fans after the final "out."

Earth Day Facts

Today is International Earth Day, an annual event for people around the world to celebrate the earth and renew our commitment to building a safer, healthier and cleaner world for all. You can find many ways to get involved at www.earthday.net. Take a look at some climate change facts from Earthday.net:

· By 2030 the number of automobiles in the world will increase by 50%.
· According to Chevron, the world consumes two barrels of oil for every barrel discovered.
· It took 125 years to consume the first trillion barrels of oil – the world will consume the next trillion in only 30 years.
· By 2030 the world will consume 47% more oil than it did in 2003.
· The current pace of sea-level rise is 50% faster then in the last century. Scientists estimate the sea level will rise by 3.5-34.6 inches by 2100.
· Much of the United States has already warmed, by as much as 4°F.
· The five warmest years over the last century have been: 2005, 1998, 2002, 2003 and 2004. The 10 warmest years have all occurred since 1990.
· Over 20 million Americans, 6.3 million of which are children, suffer from asthma. Public health experts are worried that those numbers will rise with continued greenhouse gas emissions.
· Diseases such as malaria and West Nile virus will occur in large numbers in the United States as a result of warmer temperatures.
· The Arctic ice pack has lost an area about twice the size of Texas since the mid-1970’s.
· Automobiles count for almost a third of the America’s Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions – the largest source after power plants.
· Each gallon of gasoline burned creates 20 pounds of CO2.
· Vehicles in the United States release more CO2 than all the energy sources (such as heating, electricity, vehicles, and factories) in all of India.
· As many as 15-37% of all wildlife species in some regions could be “committed to extinction” by 2050 because of global climate change.

Now THIS is cool...

So tomorrow is EARTH DAY.... What Better Day For NASA To Air Earth Views From Space?

NASA plans to telecast high-definition views of the Earth from the International Space Station tomorrow in celebration of Earth Day. NASA scientists said the space station and its crew have an exceptional view of the Earth, orbiting the planet once every 90 minutes from an altitude of approximately 220 miles at a speed of about 17,500 mph. That provides the crew with 16 sunrises and sunsets each day. The station has been continuously occupied since November 2000. The special high-definition Earth views can be seen tomorrow from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. [ET]. A schedule of all NASA Earth Day programming, satellite coordinates and other information is available at www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/MM_NTV_Breaking.html.

Earthling....

Tomorrow is International Earth Day, first celebrated on April 22, 1970. It is an annual event for people around the world to celebrate the earth, renew their commitment to building a safer, healthier and cleaner world for all, clean up and plant something!! C'mon. It's for mother earth!

M & M

How about something light for a Monday...

These days, you can get M&M's in any color under the sun, with personalized messages, with initials, school or business colors. If you've ever been to the M&M factory store in Vegas, you know what I mean. 4 floors of M&Mania. And they still don't melt in your hand!

Word out today that Brooks & Dunn are now M&Ms. They are two of the new “shell-ebrities” featured on the candy company’s Web site, www.m-ms.com. Kix Brooks is shown as a blue shell with a black cowboy hat and boots. Ronnie Dunn is a green M&M with blondish hair and a goatee. Both have guitars. Other M&M “shell-ebrities” include Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Enrique Iglesias and NASCAR driver Kyle Busch. (Grrr.. I'm obviously NOT a KB fan but I won't hold that against them ;-)

Who steals KETCHUP?

Jurors in Southern California are deliberating the case of stolen ketchup.

Steve Rocco is charged with misdemeanor petty theft after authorities say he took a bottle of ketchup from the cafeteria area at Chapman University. Rocco is an eccentric former school board trustee who claims he was framed. (Ya' think?) He says he was just "recycling the bottle."

Rocco’s lawyer says there was no crime because the ketchup was worth “zero dollars and zero cents.” Prosecutors said they tried to settle the case by getting Rocco to promise to stay away from the university, but he refused. If convicted, prosecutors say they’ll likely ask for probation for Rocco.

Ok. So we GOTTA be missing something in this BONEHEAD story... Whatdayathink??

SMILE before you say "I do"

Smiles Can Predict Marriage Success

If you want to know whether your marriage will survive, look at your spouse’s yearbook photos. Psychologists have found that how much people smile in old photographs can predict their success in marriage. What? Yes! In one test, researchers looked at people’s college yearbook photos, and rated their smile intensity from 1 to 10. None of the people who fell within the top 10% of smile strength had divorced, while within the bottom 10% of smilers, almost one in four had had a marriage that ended in divorce. In a second trial, the research team asked people over age 65 to provide photos from their childhood. The researchers scored each person’s smile, and found that only 11% of the biggest smilers had been divorced, while 31% of the frowners had gone through a divorce. Go figure.

SoulWOW?

You're not going to believe this.

Now you can "SoulWow" Your Sins Away!

A new product is available in parts of New York that will leave you with that “almost baptized feeling.” SoulWow has the cleansing power of confession. In a YouTube parody of the popular ads for ShamWow towels, a priestly pitchman called Father Vic calls on Roman Catholics in Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island to partake in confession. The campaign was launched a couple of weeks ago by the dioceses of Brooklyn and Rockville Centre in an effort to increase the number of people who confess during Holy Week. Church officials say they’ve seen an upsurge of followers seeking absolution. Check it out: www.soulwow.com.

Amen.

Favorite Easter candy...

Probably malted milk eggs or plain old marshmallow eggs. I like Peeps, but only after they've dried up on the counter for a few days. Just in case you care, here are some fun Peeps facts.

· The amount of Peeps chicks and bunnies eaten at Easter could more than circle Earth’s circumference.

· The number of Peeps chicks, bunnies and other shapes made each day could make a path from the factory door in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, to the state of Maryland.

· The Peeps machines can crank out 3,800 Peeps per minute.

· It would take approximately 172 million Peeps bunnies end-to-end to circle the moon.

· Over 70 million Peeps chicks lined up beak-to-tail are needed to reach from New York to Los Angeles.

· If you had 8,000 Peeps bunnies, and you stood them in a straight vertical line, you could reach the top of the Sears Tower in Chicago.

· Each Peeps chick has 32 calories and 0 grams of fat.

· Peeps chicks and bunnies come in 5 colors. Yellow chicks are the most popular, followed by pink, lavender, blue and white.

· In the early 1950s, it took 27 hours to make one Peeps chick. Today it takes six minutes.

A New Twist On An Old Easter Tradition

After yesterday's blog about bunnies, THIS is a REALLY great idea!!

Waking up Easter morning to find a basket filled with chocolates and live chicks is a springtime tradition that dates back to ancient Persian and Egyptian cultures. But the old tradition sometimes has fatal consequences. The American Humane Association warns that most chicks die within a few weeks due to rough handling or infection. And playing with live chicks or bunnies can be dangerous for children as well; young birds often carry salmonella, which can cause potentially life-threatening illness in humans. There is a safe way to give live animals at Easter time: give them as gifts to families in need by purchasing the animals through World Vision’s Gift Catalog. Rather than becoming an unwanted toy, live animals given to families struggling in the developing world become important sources of income and nutritional food. Through the gift catalog, you can:

- Purchase two chickens to supply a family with eggs ($25)
- Buy five ducks and two chickens - a valuable source of needed income ($55)
- Give a goat, a source of milk and meat for hungry families ($75)
- Help build a fishing pond and provide fishing equipment ($240)
- Supply an alpaca for warm wool and increased income ($360, or $15 per share)
- Buy a dairy cow to provide a family with milk to drink and sell ($500, or $50 per share)

The gift donor in turn receives a special card describing the gift that was purchased and the impact it will have in the life of a person in need. The World Vision Gift Catalog offers more than 100 poverty-fighting gifts ranging in price from $10 to $39,000 that can be purchased in the name of a child, friend, or loved one. Find out more at http://www.worldvision.org/. Talk to you on 97.5, Ycountry. Or click "listen live" on this web page.

Chocolate Bunnies or Real Bunnies?

With Easter approaching this Sunday, it can be very tempting to give in to a child’s requests and get them their very own live Easter bunny. But in most cases, it’s a bad idea. Rabbits can live for 10 years, and need as much care and attention as dogs and cats. To make matters worse, too many of them are given up by people who find they can’t or don’t want to care for them. They are relinquished to shelters, where many lose their lives when homes are not found. If you really want to consider bringing a bunny into your family, at least do some research first; the House Rabbit Society’s Web site, www.rabbit.org, provides vast resources for learning about the care and needs of rabbits. Consider whether a rabbit would really make a great pet for your family, and whether you can really give it the life it deserves, not just for a few weeks or months but for many years. Ask yourself these questions:

· Would you consider adopting a rabbit if it weren’t Easter time?
· Do children who ask for a bunny really understand what they’re asking for?
· If they were asking for a cat or dog, would you make the same decision?
For those parents willing to make the long-term commitment, HRS suggests contacting your local animal shelter, humane society or rabbit rescue group for information about adopting a rabbit, rather than purchasing one from a pet store. A full list of HRS chapters and contacts, as well as comprehensive information on rabbit care, can be found at www.rabbit.org. You can also find out more at www.makeminechocolate.org.

Easter memories...

Spent a wonderful afternoon with in-laws and family from Jackson, Mi. Sunday.
What a great time! We ate, got up to date with family, ate, laughed, ate, played games, ate, then wrapped up festivities with a good old fashioned Easter egg hunt.

Watching neices and other wide eyed youngster relatives scour Grandpa's acres for plastic eggs, My brain (and nose) took me back to the 1970's when I hunted the real thing. I still chuckle when I remember the egg dad found several weeks later, beneath a bush, with the lawn mower! I can smell it to this day! It sure did clean out the sinuses! Plastic eggs. Ingenious!

I love Easter! Church services always strengthen faith and renew hope. Flowers remind us of new beginnings, eggs of an empty tomb and darn it, kids think bunnies are cute and they're right.

We'll be talking Easter this week on the show and I'll be sharing some fun Easter statistics here later in the week. And don't forget, Wild Bill is live from Florida every morning this week 6a-10a!

1.2.3. GO!

Ok then. Well here we go! I'm finally jumping in to the blogging thing.
I've been meaning to do it for sometime but have been overloaded keeping up with Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, Plaxo etc! Gees. Hard enough to keep up with email alone!
So what did we do with all of the time we now use doing all of this stuff? Technology is truly amazing, especially when it works! I love the fact that i'm able to keep in touch with people I haven't seen (and some on purpose) for years! So i'll do my best to add this to my "things to do" list and share some fun stuff in the days and weeks ahead. Thanks for listening to Y-Country! Talk to you every weekday 3-7 at 97.5FM in Southwest Michigan and we're streaming live at 975ycountry.com!
